Memphis is a great city to get away to for a weekend. There is a lot of history, culture, and excitement here. That being said, if you are strapped for time, here are the places that you should definitely hit up. Please keep in mind that most of the museums/attractions open around 10:00 a.m and close around 5:30 p.m. There are of course exceptions, but I would recommend getting an early start so that you can get the most out of your day.
1) Sun Studio: Sun Studio's claim to fame is that it was the sounding board for a bunch of legendary musicians, including Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, and B.B King. You can walk into the recording studio where these legends recorded their songs and take a picture with the actual microphone that these musical titans used! I have a full blog post up HERE if you want more details.
2) Graceland: If you HAD to pick only one thing to do in Memphis, it should be Elvis Presley's home, Graceland. Sure, we have all heard about the King and know a few songs, but visiting his home truly makes you appreciate what a titan he actually was. I would highly recommend Graceland, since it is not your average museum/mansion.
3) Rock n' Soul Museum: I know that this is a pretty music heavy post but hey, you're in Memphis! The Rock n' Soul Museum is a fantastic place to go for more in depth information on the history of music in this city. The museum runs entirely by audio tour (included in the cost of admission) and makes for a truly great afternoon. Full blog post HERE for more detes! ;)
** There is a FREE shuttle that runs between these three locations! So take advantage of this if you so wish. **
4) Beale Street: Naturally, a walk down the legendary Beale Street is in order for any visit to Memphis. We went during the day, but I hear that the party truly starts at night ;). There is a statue of Elvis (pictured above) that makes for a great photo op! We had lunch at the Hard Rock Cafe after our visit to the Rock n' Soul Museum, which is also located on Beale Street.
5) Grab some barbeque! We weren't in the mood for barbeque during our visit, but I heard that Central BBQ is good. Do let me know about other good barbeque joints so that I know where to go next time!
What are your favorite spots in Memphis?
Best Wishes,
The Pseudo Southerner
