Lincoln's Home in Springfield, Illinois

Perhaps one of the best parts about taking a road trip is discovering new places. On our way to Chicago, we passed through Springfield, Illinois (a.k.a. Lincoln Land). The National Park Service actually bought out the entire street where President Lincoln made his home before being elected into office. We were amazed by this because not only did we get to see the house, but the actual street it was in! In fact, it is safe to say that it is like walking into a time capsule. You are allowed to walk into a few of the homes and take pictures of the rest of them. There are volunteers dressed in period attire that periodically do talks on the history of both the area and President Lincoln.

The tour of Lincoln's home is completely free and is a fascinating look into American history. You are allowed to take pictures inside and on the grounds. The tour takes roughly fifteen minutes and is done by a knowledgeable park ranger. I was amazed how much original things from the house were preserved. The rooms were kept in such a way that visitors actually got to see what the Lincolns saw!

If you are passing through Springfield, definitely check out this historic landmark. It is located in the downtown area close to the new capitol building. There is a designated parking lot that you have to pay for. The park rangers are really helpful if you have any questions, comments, or concerns.

Have you ever visited Springfield?
